My Story

Jessica Foster Garrett Design painting in green, brown, and tan colors

Hi, I’m Jessica

Award Winning Mixed Media Artist

I am inspired by the beauty of landscapes, the subtle energy of places, and the rich tapestry of memories and emotions. I have a profound connection to the natural world and an unwavering passion for artistic expression. I bring the essence of these elements to life through an intuitive use of materials, natural elements, and color.

I seek to capture the fleeting moments of beauty and emotion that define landscapes. I am captivated by how light plays on topography, the raw beauty of natural elements, and the ever-changing moods of nature. I am drawn to the power of color to create a profound sense of place and connection to experiences and emotions. The American National Parks and Public Lands are the source of much of my inspiration. Both the physical landscape itself and the emotions they evoke.

My artistic expression is intertwined with my background in Geology and Geography. I seek to capture the interconnectedness of place and memory while also incorporating aspects of the geosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere into my various art styles and distinctive techniques.

Using the same understanding of place and connection, I offer businesses a unique way to communicate their identity and values through art that reflects their unique brand.

It is my fondest hope that my work has a tangible impact on your life.

Color is how I see the world, movement is how I experience the world, & creativity is how I connect with the world.

From a young age, I have been drawn to how color connects and how our inner experiences bring color to life. I am passionate about sharing joy and am naturally curious to discover, transform, and create.

I am fascinated by the ever-changing hues of the sky, the textures of earth and flora, and the harmonious interplay of color and light. I strive to capture not only the visual beauty but also the emotional resonance. My art represents a heartfelt attempt to capture the profound impressions and essence of the natural world.

I believe that art is a powerful tool for individuals and businesses to express their uniqueness. Art can transform interior spaces to be a place of connection to your essence and memories that resonate with your soul.

Inspired by a desire to capture the awe-inspiring essence of nature in color, texture, and movement.

Art is a form of healing and an expression of energy. My professional journey as an artist started as a journey to live in balance with chronic health and auto-immune conditions

Mindful intentionality is a central theme throughout my multidisciplinary creative expression. I am drawn to using materials for different reasons and during different seasons. My work emerges from a space of embracing the free flow of creativity, where I instinctively pursue what ignites a sense of awe and nurtures a profound connection to the sources of inspiration that breathe life into each piece. Through my process, compositions develop organically as I embrace experimentation with different media, facilitating the development of layers and intricate color relationships on both canvas and wood.

I am a self-taught artist and woodworker. I have always been drawn to the creative process of transformation and exploration to capture the fleeting moments of beauty and emotion that define landscapes. A keen perception of the transformative power of color and light to connect and inspire has shaped my artistic vision.

My upbringing was split between Australia and Florida, with time spent in the American West, Adirondacks, and Blue Ridge Mountains. As the daughter of geologists, I spent my formative years immersed in the wilderness, camping, and exploring. Countless hours were spent gazing out of car and plane windows or up at the night sky, learning to decipher the language of landscapes and becoming enthralled by the intricacies of topography. I forged a bond with the earth, playing with rocks and meticulously observing the world around me, always attuned to the elements that ignited a profound sense of wonder.

My grandma introduced me to the world of flowers, while my father, grandpa, and great-uncle imparted the art of working with wood. My mother instilled in me the understanding that color and play are the essential cornerstones of creating.

Many of the techniques I have incorporated into my distinctive creative expression come from learning how to renovate my home with my husband and family. I love spending time with my husband, dog, and family hiking or doing any outdoor physical activity, working on house projects or in the garden, cooking, and reading.

I have a Master's Degree in Geography from WVU, specializing in Geographic Information Science and Spatial Data Analysis with research in local food systems, a B.A. in Environmental Geoscience, B.A in Political Science and a Certificate in International Relations from the University of Florida.

My background in geology and geography weaves seamlessly into my creative expression, stemming from a deep appreciation for rocks, landscapes, and aerial perspectives. I endeavor to merge science and art, channeling the unique essence and personal experiences of places through the interplay of texture, movement, and color.

Before starting my career as a professional artist with Design By JessAnne, I worked for various organizations and businesses as a marketing assistant, brand advisor, and graphic artist, helping to build bridges between a brand's strategic direction and creative expression. I use this experience in my commissions for businesses, where I strive to capture the unique essence of their brand in art that connects with their message and clientele.
